Bože, dođoše neznabošci
u dostojanje tvoje.
I ne samo što oskrvnuše svete crkve,
no ognja delo tvorahu od njih.
I položiše truplje slugu tvojih
za hranu pticama nebesnim,
tela prepodobnih tvojih
zverima zemljinim.
Ne oko Jerusalima samo,
no po svoj zemlji ovoj.
I bi da se vidi plač
i ridanje ne manje od prvog.
Jer ove klahu, a one
koji ostadoše živi
odvođahu u svoju zemlju.
I ne na reci vavilonskoj,
kao što oni tada, seđasmo,
no na onom u koga sve reke,
male i velike, utiču.
Razdvajani bismo
i rasprodavani u svu zemlju tih.
I mati zbog čeda plakaše,
i otac gorko ridaše,
i brat brata obuhvativši
suze ljute prolivaše,
i sestre braću, i braća sestre,
gledajući gde drugoga drugde odvode,
ruke oko vrata jedan drugom spletoše,
žalosno kričahu.
O zemljo, rastvori se,
žive primi sve nas!
I drugi kud drugde odvođen
natrag gledaše,
sve dok očima koje ga gledaju
nevidljiv bivaše

AN ABANDONED CHURCH (in the environs of Peć)
There lies an ancient icon of Christ crucified.
Down from the broken ribs his blood flows in a stream.
The lips are white, the eyes dead—death personified.
Above his head rays of the silver nimbus gleam.
A gift from the faithful of high and low degree
Gold coins around his neck lie in a lustrous band.
The frame, all over chased with silver filigree,
Was carved and fashioned by a Debar master’s hand.
In the deserted nave, Christ Lord forgotten lies.
When all around the light of day grows dim and dies
And birds of prey which hunt by night take to the air,
Alone in the abandoned Church where vampires ride
Christ, awesome and despairing, with his arms spread wide,
Eternally awaits his flock which is not there…
I feel today that in me flows the blood
Of all my forbears heroic and wild,
And well understand on this evening dull,
Why the games of war I loved as a child.
And I despise sadness, forget the pain,
For I feel in me surging like the tide
The blood of martyrs who silently died
On hideous stakes horribly impaled.
True, with my nature I have wrestled long
And—the will finding the way not in vain—
Succeeded on this rude and ancient wood
To graft at last a new and noble strain.
Though I may cry when the blue-haloed moon
Sets sail along the celestial apse,
Or when the sirene songs of ancient woods
One night into malignant silence lapse,
Nevertheless I feel beneath fresh shoots
And recent grafts as strong as in the past,
Like potent food arising from the roots,
The inexhaustive might of braves forepassed.
Then all is gone. Forgotten is the pain,
And one by one they all come to my side,
Old braves and martyrs who silently died
On hideous stakes horribly impaled…
