St. John the Baptist Church in Vucje

The small town of Vucje in the canyon of the Vucjanka River at the foot of Mt. Kukavica in southern Serbia hosts the Church dedicated to the birth of St. John the Baptist, the work of famous Russian architect and professor Grigoriy Ivanovich Samoylov. According to some sources, it was built at the location of a medieval church, the endowment of Nikola Skobaljic, the Serbian hero from the Ottoman era. The church was destroyed by the Turks, but the Serbian people, according to tradition, still gathered at the place of its remains, thus maintaining their faith and spirit at the time of Turkish occupation. This was one of the reasons why the Teokarevic family, the well known industrialists, who during the late 19th and early 20th centuries developed the textile industry in this part of Serbia, built a new church at the same place.
