Ah dear Nickos: You are correct. No one dives for the cross in this climate. It was minus 25 celsius and we spent the day before makeing the cross out of ice with a chainsaw, and "welding" the pieces together with buckets of water that frose when poured on the contruction of the altar.

Fascinating! And that cross made of ice! I say it *is* exceptional.I suppose there is no dropping the cross in the water for swimmers to retrieve in that cold. Or does this still happen in other northern countries, despite the weather?
